Netware is a cost effective platform also reliable for delivering security and network access to recourses which makes it fitting for business starters. The NetWare 6.5 is flexible with some choices that may help the administrator delivering an excellent production. Thus NetWare saves money, administration time and provide more service.

Netware 6.5 has improvement of clustering support up to 32 servers also keeps the network recourses available even if there is maintenance on that server. The cluster services had been built in Netware 6.5 with more futures. As administrator should build a remote cluster to recover the network resources and keep the system up and running. This proves that NetWare is capable and prepared for disaster solutions. NetWare have the option for storage management to transfer files quickly, reliable and securely. Also it Uses NSS (Novell Storage Service) to transform large volumes as well have the capabilities to track storage growth. It is also support Internet Small Computer System Interface (iSCSI) this help the administrator to use the SCSI storage interface to sends data over IP address its reliable way for saving the organization the expenses of having fiber channel, by linking the IP with data storage. The iSCSI receive commands for storage access and summarizes them into IP packets. To send data over the internet network the data have to be encrypted for security issues. When the packets are received it is decrypted the storage packets commands extracted from the IP. In addition NetWare 6.5 can be configured as iSCSI dick server.

Backup system

Netware 6.5 has improvement of modified file list to handle open files which add a snapshot at the disk block level, the Snapshot fractures are:

eDirectory Services

The eDirectory give the administrator the capabilities and tools to manage the network recourses, such as the NetWare servers users and printers for the Organization perspective. The eDirectory is an LDAP compatible directory service and database that stores information about all the network resources.

The NetWare 6 most of the bindery data is automatically added to the directory database. This makes Netware 6 to saves the administrator from having to recreate all the data about users and groups.

The Novell eDirectory service is based on X.500 standards that offer several additional features.

For example:

Console on management of objects and partitions replicas and directory schema.

Merge utility for combining eDirectory trees.

iMontior utility used to monitor and diagnose servers in the tree from the web browser.

Index manager utility used to create and manage eDirectory database indexes.

The operation of eDirectory uses Flexible and Adaptive Information Manager (FLAIM) a highly scalable indexed database. The FLAIM database system uses log files to back out and roll forward transaction in the event of system failure. The completed transactions called committed transaction that is placed in a log file.

The directory database is divided into partitions. These partitions are distributed to all the servers in the network so that of there is a server frailer the administrators don’t lose the entire directory database.

Benefits of eDirectory

Login: using eDirectory the used logs in to the directory service and gain access to resources that been assigned rights to user.

Administration: the administrator can administrate the server with iManager utility to administrate the eDirectory from the web browser and access to all resources of the network.

Security: the eDirectory uses RAS algorithm for the user login to access the network

Reliability: the eDirectory provide fault tolerance for the network because the directory databases are distributed.

eDirectory Directory trees

the eDirectory tree consist of top tree as root then a goes to a branches of the tree root which leads to branch children.

The container object that implies holds other objects which are used to organize the network resources that are represented by the leaf object.

The leaf objects they cannot hold any other objects which they are used to store data about the recourses of the network.

Country object: organize the directory tree for the organization country location.

Organization object: used to organize the tree and to represent the organization company

Organization unit object: is a subdivided of the Organizational structure which they are used for creating organizational structure in the directory tree.

Domain controller Object used to organize the Domain name system (DNS) such as DNS server, zone and host computer.

Preparing NetWare server

The NetWare installation divided in to two parts server and workstation. Which makes it involves in setting up the NetWare operating system on the server hard drive and loading the necessary drivers to access the network interface card (NIC) and setting up the eDirectory tree. However the workstation settings are to install and load the software and the drivers on the user workstation to gain access to the NetWare server.

NetWare server name must be a unique name to identify the server and distinguish it from other machines on the network. The NetWare server must be assigned a unique internal network number.

Determine the IP addresses range by choosing the private addressing range that is available: 10.0.0.1 to 10.255.255.254, 172.16.0.1 to 172.31.255.254 and 192.168.0.1 to 192.168.255.254. These addresses are non-routable IP addresses and used by businesses to shield their systems from the outside world.

Installing NetWare Server

By inserting the operating system CD to the server CD-ROM the operating system is booted to the installing phase to start creating a DOS partition and setting the language region of the server. The default partition size of 200 MB to create a DOS partition after the DOS partition is created and automatically formatted and the system restarted to start copying the files that are needed to setting up NetWare server directory and start the NetWare Server Kernel and precedes the text based installation.

The installation phase

By reading or agreeing to the license agreement by pressing F10 to continue and show the NetWare installation window. Setting the NetWare server to Default and Continuing installation and the system will go through the process to check the VGA card and LAN card detecting them automatically if they are not detected them they can be installed manually by a floppy disk or from the menu list of LAN drivers. Then continuing to the copy NetWare files and to install the NNS management utility which installed automatically.

After the system restart it displaying the GUI interface with wizard installation mode.

Novell DNS/DHCP server used to provide the administrator a management over the server via Novell eDirectory

-Novell iFolder Storage Services

It is a Net services software solution that allows the user to local data file to follow

-eDirectory SNMP Subagent

It is used to provide real time monitoring to manage the network functions

-MySQL

It is a structured query language (SQL) database

-Novell NetStorage

It allows users to access their files on NetWare server through a web browser.

_OpenSSH

It is a secure encryption tunneling capability used to gain access to the server on the network using TCP connection

- WAN connectivity

It allows the administrator to set up a wan connection between two Netware servers Using Per-to-Per Protocol (PPP)

-eGuide

It is a web-based application that is uses a GUI interface for searching to view or edit information that are stored in Novell eDirectory

-Novell iManager 2.0

It is an application for configuring other options

-Novell Virtual Office Frame Work

It is used to offers the users a Virtual Office home Page to access to iPrent, NetStorage, eGuide and Web Mail that can be configured through iManager.

In order the component above to be installed the Product CD is needed to be installed those components.

After the files are copied and installed a wizard window appears to assign the server a name in a test field then pressing next to the Encryption window.

In the figure above shows the Encryption wizard which that needs to install a license for the NetWare copy right from the License CD, however the administrator have to locate the file manually from the CD.

In this figure above shows the network configurations for the NetWare server which it is IP address for the internal network ranges 192.168.0.1 to 192.168.255.254 and by checking the IP box. But for further options the administrator can check the IPX box to identify an IPX server on IPX network. The IPX uses the physical address which assigned to the network interface board a complete IPX network address is 12 byte hexadecimal number a 4 bytes for the network, 6 byte for the node number and 2 byte for the socket number all for the server and the 2 byte to the server process.

Installing Novell Client software

In order the NetWare server to communicate with other user’s workstation, Novell client software must be implanted on the user workstation. To communicate and access the network services the client workstation requires a NIC card and protocol software components.

By understanding the NIC card communication process the NIC driver controls the NIC so it can send and receives packets over the network. The communication protocols are responsible for formatting the data in a network packet and routing packets between different networks. The modern communication networks protocol uses TCP/IP to access both internal and external networks. In order the client to communicate to the server the client needs a software to communicate to the Netware server because the Microsoft operating system used common interface file service (CIFS) but the NetWare server needs a Novell client to communicate to the Netware server, the client software have to be installed to the client workstation which it used NetWare Core Protocol (NCP) for the old version of NetWare server the newer version of Netware 6 used Native Fail Access Protocol (NFAP) which enables NetWare 6 Server to accepts services requests by non-Novell clients such as Microsoft, Apple, and Unix.

Ways to install Novell Client.

Can be installed from CD

Installed from network shard folder to execute the Novell Client on the workstation.

Install from the internet by downloading the latest Novell client software.

After the Novell Client installed on the workstation such as Microsoft workstation the Novell Client will prompt a restart to when the system loading the user will see the login Novell window.

Before accessing to network recourse and services the user mute have an authentication as a username and password to gain access to the network. Novell have its own user name and password, unlike Microsoft workstation have its own authentication username and password to login.

As an Administrator to Novell network, the administrator needs to create a username and password in Novell eDirectory. In the Novell client window the user can chose the tree of the network, the Contexts refers organization of the user where is he created in and the server is where to type in the server name or add it from the list.

Novell management utility

The NetWare Administrator (NWAdmin) the network administrator can access the NWAdmin through workstation have Novell Client software. The administrator access the workstation with the administrator username and password to have full access to the NetWare server thorough shared driver.

The administrator log to the workstation with administrator username and password.

Opening the shortcut of the NetWare driver to PublicWin32 folder by double click on my computer.

Accessing to the folder win32 then double clicking the nwadmin32.

With this tool the administrator can browse the eDirectory tree, view object properties and create new objects. Also the admin will see within the window tool is a tool bar to manage the server.

ConsoleOne Utility

To manage the eDirectory tree the administrator needs the ConsoleOne utility which makes it the main utility in NetWare 6. ConsoleOne which can be run on the NetWare 6 server but loading the ConsoleOne across the network is slower and uses the network bandwidth. The administrator can get the executable file ConsoleOne from Novell website by downloading the latest version available and installed on the workstation.

Logging to the workstation as administrator

Start installing ConsoleOne

Directed the installation files to driver PublicClientConsoleOne of the server SYS volume

Accessing the server volume and double clicking C1.exe that located in the client folder

Display the installation options for ConsoleOne

Setup begins extracting files then ConsoleOne display a welcome window.

Information in the welcome window appears then next.

License Agreement window then clicked agree then next.

Clicking accept the default installation directory. Then next to accept the default component, next to install in English, license window appears selecting I DO clicking Next.

Clicking Finish button to complete installation.

ConsoleOne uses snap-in to add objects and manage the network.

iManager web utility

It is used to manage the server remotely without installing ConsoleOne by opening the web browser and typing the link to the URL https://ip_adress:2200/eMFeame/imanager.html

In addition iManager is based on eDirectory Management Framework (eMFrame) it is a web site application to manage eDirectory services.

User management security

As an administrator the users should have a limitation access to services and recourses and only authorized users have access to login to their privileges that are assigned to the users to access.

The login security measures are

User names

Password and password restrictions

Time and station restrictions

Login restrictions

As an admin of the NetWare server the administrator can manage and access to all network services including the entire eDirectory tress and file system. In order to have users to the Netware server the administrator needs to created users and groups object in the eDirectory tree for each user. The user name can be up 64 characters and the administrator can limit the login name characters for users. There are two common ways for users to memories the user name that assigned to them. The first way is to use the first letter of the user real name followed by the first seven letters of the user last name so the total is eight letters, for example Mike Rehired is MREHIRED. The advantage of this method the user name is similar to the user real name. The disadvantage is the where the similar users have different first name and same last name which makes it users confliction, for example Mary Rehired MREHIRED.

The second method is for creating user name to use the first three letters of the user real name followed by the first three letters of the user last name in this organized way there is a smaller chance of repetition. For example Mike Rehired is MIKREH. The disadvantage of this method the username are less familiar for the users.

Passwords

Password can be assigned to user to access the network and the users can change the password and the password characters are up to 39 which increase the security for the users. Password can be changed once in a while for security issues. Password length can be restricted so the user can remember the password of eight length character if its fifteen characters it well be difficult to remember.

Account Restrictions

Administrator for security purposes can restrict users from accessing recourses and service to the network and to ensure the users logging in their authorized zone. By using ConsoleOne to set password, time and station restriction on existing users.

Create Users and Groups

The definition of Group object it is a leaf objects that represent one or more users membership.

When creating Groups object it is useful for grouping users to assign them right which makes it easier for the administrator to manage users with similarity privileges. In addition its easer to created group and add user to it for example if a company haired someone to manage the website the administrator can give them permission for Website mangers Group object and the administrator can call it any name to make it easier to recognize the users in the object if there is changes to the users who are inside this group object the administrator can remove a user and add another one if needed.

Organization role object an object used similar as group object. Also the administrator can add multiple users for the Organization role object in addition there is another good use of the Organization Role Object is to assign rights to backup administrator account.

Managing eDirectory with iManager

As Novell administrator it is easier to manage and maintain the organization network from any workstation that is attached to the network system. The iManager utility makes managing and maintaining the eDirectory from internet browser and adding the URL for the server followed by the port number 2200 for example “https//192.168.1.33:2200â€Â the https tells the browser to use the Secure Socket Layer (SSL) for secure connection and the other number is to tell the port number to open the Web Manager page.

When the administrator access the eDirectory through the web browser using the iManager utility in the web browser will show a login to the eDirectory username, password, context and tree. Once the admin login to iManager main window will see five links within them subcategories
