The literature review includes five parts: firstly, it will introduce the history of performance appraisal though four different periods, and then definition and purposes of performance appraisal systems will be discussed. Different forms of performance appraisal will be explained in details in the third part, the top-down and customer appraisals are the key study areas. Finally, general problems and solutions of the performance appraisal systems will be discussed.

Rationale developed from literature review will be identified in the conclusion.
