Pai And Her Grandfather Koro
Pai is a young girl born in a family with the background of chiefs. She is energetic and is very determined to learn the aspects of being a leader, however because she is a girl she is looked down at by her grandfather. But even after been warned by the grandfather that she is not supposed to meddle with the things that only the boys are suppose to do, she is still so keen to know the virtues of a leader.
She possesses a servant leader which is not recognized by anyone and not even her family. Because she comes from a chiefly background therefore she also personifies trait leadership quality. A trait leadership distinguish personal characteristics, of a leader, such as intelligence, honesty, self-confidence and appearance, thus that's how Pai was.On the other hand Koro shows the quality of being an autocratic and authoritarian leader hence this kind of leader's believes in 'my way or highway'. Kurt Lewin's showed how an autocratic leader is best described, these kinds of leaders provide clear information that things should be done according to them. Hence Koro had the control over his villagers and family as well.
He wanted things to be done his way, he believed that woman were not meant to be leaders therefore he always looked down at Pai.
EFFECTIVENESS OF A LEADER
Pai herself is attracted in the leadership, learning traditional songs and dances, but is given little encouragement by her grandfather. Pai feels that she can become the leader, although there's no precedent for a woman to do so, and is indomitable to succeed.Pai is very determined to learn lesson's given by her grandfather; therefore she secretly follows all the lessons. When she comes to know that her uncle won a Taiaha tournament, she persuades her uncle to teach her as well, this leads Pai to win a Taiaha fight against Hemi, thus Koro becomes very angry and blames Pai for everything wrong. She is also quite effective as people listens to her when she speaks and being the whale rider also gives her an authenticity of being a leader.Koro demonstrates a very effective leadership quality. People follow him, listen to him and believe in whatever he does.
Koro possesses great knowledge of their culture and of his people. He is a highly rigid person thus this was the only reason for his downfall, like he believed woman cannot be leaders thus he failed to see the qualities which Pai had.
TYPE OF POWER
Pai holds referent power thus her people's has respect for her and desires to follow her ways. In referent power, the leader leads by example, and thus that is what Pai exemplifies, for example, Pai's people really trusted her. He also abuses his power on his son and Pai, especially when he is not able to accept the change, he doesn't want to believe that Pai could make a good leader.A situation from the film that would illustrate the leadership analysis for Pai and Koro would be, Pai is able to beat Hemi in a Taiaha fight and when Koro learns about this he becomes very furious.
