History is witness to the fact that Central Asia has played a pivotal position on the geo-political front by virtue of its vital location on the cross-roads of Europe and Asia. The demise of the Soviet Union and the strategic, vacuum so created in the region has made Central Asia the recipient, of an intense engagement from a multitude, of nations in pursuit of their political, economic and security interests. In the backdrop of a fragile security situation, growing radicalisation of Islamic societies and intense economic rivalries, many believe that the current dynamics have acquired the dimensions of a complex "New Great Game of the 21st Century  " that is being played by Russia and China, with other regional powers like India, Iran, Turkey and Pakistan participating from the periphery, with US also playing a major role in orchestrating the chess board as it best suits it.
