Long Term Policy For Municipal Solid Waste
Hong Kong as a metropolitan city, we have a densely populated, high-rise offices and housing but limited land supply. Government requires collecting, transfer and dispose millions of tonnes of municipal solid waste (MSW) each year, as the total amount of waste dumped in the city continue to rise. We rely solely on our landfills to meet our waste disposal need.
It is creating a real and pressing burden on the landfills.Landfill might not be a good solution in future to disposal MSW (Dr. Helmut Schnurer, Section Head at the Federal Environment Ministry). Hong Kong need an integrated waste management approach to waste reduction mainly with recycling and incineration to dispose of it to landfills, so it can decrease the burden on scarce land. Admittedly, reducing waste is not something that can be achieved overnight, but if all the time was spent on words without action, the problem of waste would not go away.
Indeed, it might soon become unmanageable. Developing incineration technology is the first step to help Hong Kong on MSW management.
