Singapore A Sustainable City

Introduction

Sustainable development is not merely environmental conservation but one which has implications on the quality of life of future generations and the long-term effects on the environment.Singapore is a small city state spanning an area of just 700 square kilometers. With few natural resources and limited land, the government has to lay out bold initiatives to ensure the city's sustainability. Singapore has to develop and grow into a clean, green and efficient city to boost economic development and living conditions in light of its resource scarcity. It needs to maximize land use, maintain high standards of water and waste managements, ensure energy efficiency and construct green buildings.

This will allow present needs to be met, while not compromising the ability of future generations to meet their needs (World Commission on Environment and Development, 1987).The world is also experiencing many unprecedented problems like the global financial crisis and climate change. With such challenges looming ahead, it has become increasingly important for Singapore to remain sustainable economically, socially and environmentally.
