There have been more than 30,000 farmers who committed suicides in Maharashtra in the last decade, out of which more than 70% farmers belong to the 11 districts of Vidarbha region. This is mainly because of the infertility of the land, lack of ample amount of water resources, lack of new technologies and due to the negligence of the state govt. towards the farmer's needs. The main crop in Vidarbha being Cotton, but the farmers growing it do not get their share from the govt., which lead to the high distress among them, leading to the massive suicides. Due to the absence of any responsible counseling either from the government or society there were many farmers who did not know how to survive in the changing economy. Such stresses pushed many into a corner where suicide became an option for them.

The Vidharbha Region is an area of 97,404 km2, making up 31.7% of the land area of the state of Maharashtra, India. It is made up of two of the state's six administrative divisions: Amravati and Nagpur. Within these divisions are 11 districts: Bhandara, Chandrapur, Gadchiroli, Gondiya, Nagpur, and Wardha within Nagpur and Amravati, Akola, Buldana, Washim, and Yavatmal within Amravati division. The population of Vidarbha region is 2, 30 ,03, 179according to census of 2011 and the density of this area is236 person per square km. Percentage of people engaged in agriculture is around 70% so, majority of people living in this area still earn their living through agriculture. Most of the farmers are engaged in cultivating cotton. Despite of various policy reforms day by day and taking a step ahead in development and making India more strengthen in international phase. But all efforts are not reaching to everyone in India especially to farmers of Vidharbha region of Maharashtra. Even with multidimensional progress, India still faces problems of farmer's suicide for which many times newspaper's editor criticize government and made responsible for the same for inadequacy in policy reforms implementation. In India, Maharashtra leads in farmer's suicide and in Maharashtra, its Vidharbha region.

2. Objectives of the study:

1. To analyze the causes of farmers suicide in vidharbha region of Maharashtra.

2. To study the possible reforms to control farmers suicide.

3. Research Methodology:

The data has been collected from various secondary sources. Secondary data was collected from various published and unpublished research papers, articles, books, reports and mimeograph.

4. Limitations of the study:

This study is based on secondary data.

5. Scope of the Study:

The present study will help to understand the reasons for suicide and various reforms to control it. It will also highlight the efforts of VJAS and NABARD for farmers of vidharbha region of Maharashtra.

6. Farmers Suicide:

All over India there is a problem of farmer's suicide even in green revolution areas such as Punjab. Mainly five big states Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Madhyapradesh with Chhattisgarh. Among these five states, Maharashtra leads in farmers' suicide. Following table shows that in 2011 there were 14027 farm suicides from five big states, and out of it 3337 were from Maharashtra.
